Little change in your lifestyle can help you out in controlling diabetes. This has been recently suggested by a government study. These five steps can considerably reduce risks of diabetes by around 30 percent.

As per doctors, bad habits including smoking, drinking, and unhealthy eating enhance chances of developing type 2 diabetes. This study is the first comprehensive one to suggest healthy habits for prevention of diabetes.

The study was conducted by Reis and colleagues. They observed around 200,000 people from 8 states. In mid 1990s, they were in the age group of 50-70 and didn’t exhibit any sign of illness. Researchers asked details regarding their lifestyle, eating habits, exercise regime etc. After 10 years, around 9 percent people were found diabetic.

Five habits suggested by study are:

Normal Weight: Try to maintain healthy weight by following good exercise regime.
Non Smoking: Non smokers were found less prone to have diabetes.

Physically Active: Be active mentally and physically.

Healthy Diet: Follow healthy diet regime. Diet rich in fiber, carbohydrates, is good to reduce diabetes risk. Have lots of water. It flushes out toxins from the body.

No Drinking: Do not drink regularly. It increases the health risk. “It isn’t always an easy thing to lose weight and to maintain that weight loss over the long term,” Reis says. “So this is good news for those individuals who have a tough time losing weight: You can still lower your risk with these other lifestyle changes.”
