Because Health is your Asset

Guillain-Barre Syndrome is a serious disorder in which the body attacks the nerves of the body. There is no known specific cause for this condition, but it often appears after a repository or digestive tract infection. It can be fatal if it is not diagnosed quickly and correctly. However, with the proper treatment, most patients will completely recover.

The main symptoms of this disorder are tingling, numbness, and weakness in the extremities. Within days, or hours in severe cases, paralysis can begin and move up through the body. However, recovery can be very slow and it may take years for some people to fully recover. In the interim, the physical, emotional, and psychological effects of the disorder can be devastating.

Since the disorder can become severe so quickly, many people go from leading a healthy, active lifestyle to one of weakness, pain, and paralysis. It is imperative

that these patients receive the emotional support and psychological help necessary to help them deal with and overcome this disorder. Guillain-Barre Syndrome can cause significant health issues, even after treatment. The hardest thing for most patients to cope with is the constant fatigue, weakness, and partial paralysis. Effective and ongoing mental health care may be needed in order to give patients the added boost to complete therapy and prevent depression.

Part of an effective treatment program should include the medical treatment, such as plasmapheresis. This process removes the plasma from the blood that contains the damaged antibodies and replaces it with new plasma with healthy antibodies. In addition to these types of treatments, the patient, the family, and the physician should address the issues with patient care. This can be especially hard on the patient and the family, as most patients will require extensive, and often expensive, care as the disease is treated. This may include physical therapy, mental health counseling, medical procedures, including testing and treatment, and spiritual guidance, if requested.

In closing, this disorder can cause a complete disruption in the patient’s life, as well as the family’s. However, with the proper diagnosis, treatment, and emotional support, most people will fully recover.
